  • Means To An End – Winter Demo (2011)
    By on February 17th, 2011 | 109 Comments109 Comments Comments

    genre: Hardcore/Screamo
    country: USA
notes:  Means To An End is a newly formed screamo band Pittsburgh, PA. They’re on the more hardcore/chaotic side of screamo though. The recording style fits the band perfectly and it’s definitely great to have new bands out on the scene fucking ass. Recommended for fans of Comadre and Seeing Means More. Thanks so much to Nate for the links!

  • Bears – Todos Caerán Split (2011)
    By on February 10th, 2011 | 122 Comments122 Comments Comments

    genre: Screamo/Hardcore
    country: Australia/Canada
notes: Bears (not to be confused with Bears!) is from Tasmania, AU. They combine elements of hardcore and screamo to perfection. The vocals are a mix of spoken word and screamed parts that creates a very unique sound. They remind me a tad of Calculator. Todos Caerán is from Edmonton, Canada (Alberta). They’re a bit more chill and heavy, having a post-rock type feel with very emotional screams. Bears and Todos compliment each other very well which makes the release more than just a collection of random songs and more a unified piece of art. This release for me is an early contender for best split of the year.

  • Manbearpig – Ruined Emo
    By on February 8th, 2011 | 123 Comments123 Comments Comments

    Genre: Hardcore/Emo
    Country: UK
Notes: Manbearpig is the new kids on the block in modern melodic hardcore that meets emo.
I’ve seen them a fair amount of places on the interwebs now, so i had to give it a listen, and to be honest, i was pleased. Their name is not as good as their music is, tho. They put this album up for free themselves. Give it a try if you like Touche Amore or Defeater.

notes: Heart On My Sleeve is newly formed screamo band from Stockholm, Sweden featuring members of Followed By 37 Seconds of Happiness and The Hope & The Failure. Ina has one of my favorite vocals in the scene so I am so fucking excited to see her back. Definitely check this out. Huge thanks to Kalle for sending me the link to this!

  • Canyons – Tigon – Foreign Theaters Split; Can’t Have Nothin’ Nice (2010)
    By on December 16th, 2010 | 23 Comments23 Comments Comments

    genre: Hardcore
    country: USA
notes:  Missouri’s Canyons, Tigon from the California Bay area and Foreign Theaters also from Missouri to bring you this 12in split titled “Can’t Have Nothin’ Nice”  As we’ve come to expect, Canyons four tracks combine metal, hardcore, and rock perfectly. These tracks combine the raw passion of hardcore with heavy groove driven guitars for a sound unique to them. Think of them as Every Time I Die mixed with Clutch, Down, Coalesce, and Botch.
Next Tigon brings their mix of 90’s screamo, hardcore, metal, and punk. Think Botch, At The Drive-In, Engineer, and The Minor Times. These songs are heavy, technical , chaotic, and powerful all at once.  Foreign Theaters finishes off this split with four songs that instantly bring to mind old Touch and Go Records(Jesus Lizard, Shellac, or Therapy?) or late 90’s discord played heavier. These driving mid tempo tracks just pound away from beginning to end with no let up. Think Young Widows, Melvins, and a tinge of Kylesa. (from The Ghost Is Clear Records).

Seriously, this split brings the mosh and most certainly is a contender to be on many album of the year lists. Download this and break some windows. Thanks so much to Bobby from Canyons for letting me post this and get the word out!

    buy <— fucking do this.

    genre: Thrash/Screamo/Hardcore

  • Ten Thousand Leagues – Demo 2010
    By on December 3rd, 2010 | 132 Comments132 Comments Comments

    genre: Screamo/Hardcore/Punk
    country: USA
notes: Ten Thousand Leagues is a screamo/hardcore/punk hybrid band from California with members of Caculator, Colorchromatic, Moldar, Summer Vacation, etc. For me, the music is very intense and chaotic resembling some screamo fusion of elements from bands like Loma Prieta, Jeromes Dream, Orchid, Joshua Fit For Battle, Comadre integrated with punk/hardcore similar to Majority Rule. Definitely unique mixture of these genres. I may be bias to say this release rules because I am a Calculator and Moldar fan boy, but check this out regardless.  Thanks to Mark for the link!

    genre: Screamo
    country: Italy

    genre: Screamo/Hardcore
    country: France
notes: The Third Memory was a screamo band from France. Here are two of my favorite releases by them. With both ambient and chaotic parts, they are musically similar to Daïtro and Sed Non Satiata. Fucking amazing.
