  • Pray For Teeth – I’m Still Finding Feathers In My Hair

Pennsylvania’s Pray For Teeth is punks best kept secret. Fortunately for the scene, they’ve come out of hiding  with the recent release of a 2 song epic  7″ entitled I’m Still Finding Feathers In My Hair.  The first song, Paper Courage, is a heavy hitter from start to finish, both musically and lyrically. Each note is chosen with purpose to deliver haunting melodies that will be stuck in your head for days. The second track, Heavy Restless, is a much slower / “heavier” song and, as the title implies, will leave you restless and anxious about life. Bone crushing guitar and bass tones and a roomy drum sound blend together create beautiful melodies. There is so much angst in the vocals and I love it. This song holds no emotions back and leaves you with the haunting line: “You, you rose before the sun. Punish yourself. Me, I’m still finding feathers in my hair.” Overall, Pray For Teeth utilizes the perfect combination of sludge-metal, hardcore, post-rock and screamo to produce a unique and memorable sound. Personally, they remind me of bands such as Titan or Aussitôt Mort. However, they have their own flavor and are certainty worth checking out. Be warned: you will become addicted and will sulk in your bed alone for weeks. I’m anxiously awaiting their full length, which will be put out by Mayfly Records sometime this year.

I’m Still Finding Feathers In My Hair 7″ is being released by a variety of record labels: 100 Green (It’s a Trap! Records color), 100 Coke Bottle Clear (Root of Evil Collective color), 100 Gold (Moshtache Records color) and 200 Black

  • As We Draw / Euglena / Hexis
    By on September 14th, 2011 | 131 Comments131 Comments Comments

    genre: Hardcore/Post-Metal/Black Metal
    country: France/Russia/Denmark

Just released online today, this is a massive wall of soundish hardcore release, filled with intense screams and heavy as fuck parts. You can easily hear both sludge and screamo influences here. Hexis is a danish band, that is best described as… Well, you can pretty much sum it up with “Celeste-esque” – massive hiss and fast drummings, intense screaming and earrape that just wont stop. The russian Euglena is heavy and brutal, starting out with a long intro with guitars weeping and sustained screams. As We  Draw is a very powerful trio from France, a country that has a rumour of producing bands with really good emotion and melody, this is definitely true about AWD as well.

You can download this split for free on bandcamp, or pay what you want, or you can pre-order the 12″ as well.

    Arktika - Heartwrencher

    Arktika - Heartwrencher

    genre: screamo/post-metal/neocrust
    country: Germany, NRW
notes: this band is so great. if you’re a fan of envy’s heavy stuff, fall of efrafa or anything like that, you should definitely get this! I’d also recommend to anyone that felt Fall Of Efrafa could need some more epic skram. I love this. The title track just nails it. The lead singer is really angry and frustrated. Enjoy.

    genre: Screamo, Sludge, Post-Hardcore
    country: France
notes: As requested, here is the outstanding Time To Burn. Brilliant chaotic and explosive songs drenched in a sad and melancholic tone, these guys bring some really unique tunes. As far as I remember, it was this band that actually got me interested in the whole Post-Hardcore/Metal genre. They were on a bit of break as far as playing goes, but as of late they have announced a few shows, so be sure not to miss those if you can. Aside of Is.Land, they have one more excellent release called “Starting Point”. Enjoy.

    bitrate: 128 kBit/s
    genre: Sludge
    country: Poland/Germany
notes: I was under the impression that I posted it a while ago, but guess what…I didn’t. Which basically surprises me, since I was under huge euphoria after their show last year here in my hometown. This is their first full lenght, and wow is it great! 5 songs, 30 minutes of juicy, slow and thundering sludge sound! Definitely one of the best vocals in sludge genre and yeah you guessed it, it’s a female singer! She absolutely blew me away live (as well as the rest of the band), stunning performance which really puts a seal of “perfection” on this act. Check it out, they deserve the attention.

    bitrate: 192 kBit/s
    genre: Sludge
    country: Slovenia
notes: As promised, another Elodea album. You can hear a change of tone here, a bit more sludgy then the demo, but still this is an outstanding album. If you didn’t know, Elodea is a type of waterweed. Educational blog ftw!

    bitrate: 192 kBit/s
    genre: Sludge
    country: Slovenia
notes: Again we come to Slovenia, but this time with sludge tunes. And let me tell you right now, Elodea is quite possibly my number one sludge band. The amazing four piece brought us this demo (tape) back in 2004, followed by a hiatus after which came one more release(which I will most likely post tomorrow). All in all, they are currently working on a new album, you can hear their new song on myspace(yes, it kicks ass). Massive, powerfull, thundering sound, these guys throw a good punch to the ears, download and enjoy.
